OLD PRINTS

The series consists of three works that employ the repetition and superimposition of political slogans and the colors of Cuban propaganda to reflect on the decline and fracture of the socio-political system within that context.

Screen printing serves as the primary medium for this project. This choice is significant, as screen printing has been a recurring and emblematic tool in Cuban political propaganda, carrying with it a rich historical and symbolic weight.

Furthermore, the inherent characteristics of the medium—its reliance on matrix, repetition, superimposition, the interaction between substrates, and the physical wear of its components—align seamlessly with the conceptual aims of the series. Through the repetitive layering of slogans, vast planes of color emerge, symbolizing the state's mechanisms for validating and legitimizing its discourse. However, this repetition ultimately leads to the loss of the textual reference in the final image, signifying blind obedience, collective sacrifice, and the erosion of meaning. This process also demands significant physical effort from the artist and results in the eventual destruction of the printing matrix.

Additionally, the inherent incompatibility between the substrate and the ink creates recurring fractures in the color planes. This phenomenon serves as a metaphor for the failure of absolutist ideologies and mirrors the ongoing crisis within the political system.
